2019 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Recap - Covfefe

LNJ Foxwoods' favored Covfefe raced around the wall of horses blocking her access and took off in the stretch to conquer Saturday's $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita Park.

Breaking from the rail under Joel Rosario as the 3/2 favorite, Covfefe took back slightly and ran a few paths off of the rail. Ahead of her, Danuska's My Girl and Heavenhasmynikki dueled through opening fractions of :22.13 and :44.78.

The two sophomore fillies were much the best of the rest, as Dawn the Destroyer was a late-running third, 7 3/4 lengths behind. She nailed Spiced Perfection by a 1/2-length at the wire, while Danuska's My Girl faded to fifth. Come Dancing, Selcourt, Lady Ninja, and a tired Heavenhasmynikki completed the order of finish.

Covfefe's win was her third straight and improved her career record to 8-6-0-1. The 3-year-old daughter of Into Mischief, purchased as a yearling for $250,000, has now earned $1,110,025.

Covfefe returned $5 to win, $3.60 to place, and $3 to show. Bellafina brought back $5 to place and $3.60 to show, while Dawn the Destroyer paid $6.60 to show.

Filly & Mare Sprint Notes

Come Dancing

Blue Devil Racing Stable's 5-year-old Come Dancing jogged a mile under Francisco Tapia Tuesday morning at Santa Anita Park.

The four-time graded-stakes winner has settled in well after shipping from Belmont Park, trainer Carlos Martin said. Martin said the homebred Malibu Moon mare handled her trip to the track well and seemed happy and content as she is prepared for the Filly & Mare Sprint. Come Dancing, the 5-2 second choice in the wagering will be ridden by Javier Castellano from post four in the field of nine.

Martin is a third-generation horseman based in New York. His grandfather, Frank, is in the Hall of Fame and his late father, Jose, had a long, successful career. Jose handled the excellent sprinter Groovy, who was second in the 1987 Sprint. Come Dancing is Martin's first Breeders' Cup horse.

"It's exciting to be here. It's the pinnacle, to be at the Breeders' Cup races," he said. "It's our World Series of horse racing. It means a lot. Hopefully, not to avenge my father because he won a lot of nice races, but it would be nice to have another Breeders' Cup win for Martins. My grandfather won the inaugural Juvenile Fillies with Outstandingly by disqualification, so I'd like to make one stick for real."

Come Dancing won her career debut in November 2016, but was off for a year with an injury. She has had an outstanding season in 2019, winning four of five starts. In her most recent races she easily prevailed in the Ballerina at Saratoga and the Gallant Bloom at Belmont Park.

Covfefe

LNJ Foxwoods' Covfefe, the 2-1 favorite, arrived at Santa Anita just after noon on a flight from Kentucky. She and her four stablemates settled into barn 59.

Spiced Perfection

Entering the Filly & Mare Sprint as one of the logical players, Pantofel Stable, Wachtel Stable and Peter Deutsch's Spiced Perfection continues to impress trainer Peter Miller as she prepares for the seven-furlong affair. She galloped one mile at his San Luis Rey Downs base on Tuesday morning and is scheduled to arrive at Santa Anita Park on Wednesday morning after training.

"She's training great," he said. "She has a good post and should be in the top three in the wagering, you would think. She galloped today and looks good."

The daughter of Smiling Tiger drew post nine of nine and is the third choice on the morning line at odds of 4-1. Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez rides, replacing Javier Castellano who was aboard for her victory last out in the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 5.

What is the Breeders Cup' Filly & Mare Sprint?

The Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint is a 7-furlong (1408 m) Weight for Age stakes race for thoroughbred fillies and mares three years old and up. As its name implies, it is a part of the Breeders' Cup thoroughbred championships, the de facto year-end championship for North American thoroughbred racing, generally held in the United States (also held one time in Canada). The race is run on a dirt course (either natural dirt or a synthetic surface such as Polytrack).

The race was run for the first time in 2007 during the first day of the expanded Breeders' Cup at that year's host track, Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. Beginning in 2009, this race is a Grade I event.

The 2007 race was held at a distance of 6 furlongs (1207 m) instead of the normal distance of 7 furlongs because of the configuration of the dirt track at Monmouth Park.
