HALLANDALE BEACH, FL -- Gulfstream Park's 20-cent Rainbow 6 Jackpot was hit for a $1,079,444.22 payoff Thursday.
The popular multi-race wager had gone unsolved for 18 consecutive live programs since it was last hit for $133,874.46 with a $4 ticket on Feb. 12.
The jackpot winner invested $336 on the Rainbow 6 through the Portland, Ore. hub.
Heading into the 11th race, the last leg of the six-race sequence, there were five unique tickets eligible to take down a $1 million-plus jackpot with No. 1 Forest Funds, No. 2 Shiloh, No. 3, Skyblueandblack, No. 9 Calm Reply and No. 11 Go Sandy Go.
Forest Funds, the 2-1 favorite ridden by Luis Saez, took down the million-dollar prize for one lucky ticketholder with a tenacious effort, prevailing over Shiloh by a neck after enduring pressure throughout the 7 1/2-furlong turf race.
The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
The Rainbow 6 appeared to be on its way to going unsolved for a 19th straight program after the first three races of the sequence were won by Hellenistic ($7), Escondido ($4.40) and Wild Card Hit ($7.60). However, the jackpot was made possible with the victories of Silver Lucky Q ($40.60) in the ninth and Renombre ($52.20) in the 10th.
The Rainbow 6, which has generated many life-changing payoffs in recent years, produced a record $6.6 million payoff on May 25, 2014.
