2017 Shoemaker Mile Stakes Entries at Santa Anita Park

Heart to Heart

Canada's 2014 champion 3-year-old male, multiple G3 winning Brian Lynch trainee and defending fourth place finisher in this race enters in good form - a second last time out in the G1 Maker's 46 Mile at Keeneland April 14 followed a good win March 4 in the G3 Canadian Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park and a fourth in the G2 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes on that track January 14. Before that was a front running win in the minor El Prado Stakes at Gulfstream December 17, a fourth in the minor Artie Schiller Stakes at Aqueduct November 19, a nice win in the G3 Knickerbocker Stakes at Belmont Park October 10 and a fourth in the 2016 G1 Shoemaker Mile. Other results include three straight wins - all in gate-to-wire fashion - the 2016 G3 Canadian Turf Stakes, the 2016 G2 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes January 9 and the G3 River City Handicap at Churchill Downs November 26, 2015. In 2014, he had a nice three race win streak as well - the G3 Commonwealth Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs, the G3 Jefferson Cup Stakes and the minor Better Talk Now Stakes in wire-to-wire fashion. Heart to Heart now has 12 wins, four seconds and two third place finishes in 28 career starts and has alternated wins and losses his last six starts. Julien Leparoux tries to keep the roll going from the rail.

Bal a Bali

Brazilian Triple Crown winner and 2014 Brazilian Horse of the Year, Richard Mandella trainee has 14 wins, a second and four third place finishes in 24 career starts. He won his last eight races at home (6 group stakes) before debuting in North America with a nice win in the G3 American Stakes at Santa Anita in May, 2015. He has been up and down the last year - a fifth last time out in the G1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs May 6 followed a nice win in the G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile on his track March 11. Before that was an eighth in the G1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita last June 25, a fourth in the G2 Charles Whittingham Memorial Stakes on this track May 29 and three straight third place finishes including the G3 San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate April 30, the G3 Frank E Kilroe Mile March 30 and in the G2 San Gabriel Stakes January 2 to start 2016. Bal a Bali has been a tad tough to figure out and has failed to place in his three of his last four starts overall - he has won seven of 12 turf mile starts however. He shoots for his first win in18 months Saturday from post 3 with Mike Smith guiding him.

What a View

Kenneth Black trained gelding has seven wins and five second place finishes in 20 career starts. He arrives off a dominating win in the minor Crystal Water Stakes on this track May 20 which followed a sixth in the G1 Maker's 46 Mile at Keeneland April 14 and a runner-up finish behind Bolo in the G2 Arcadia Stakes here February 11. Before that was a second behind graded winner Ashleyluvssugar in the minor California Cup Turf Classic here January 28. Mixed in there are some bad results - a sixth in the G2 Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar November 26 and a last of fourteen after tiring in the Breeders' Cup Mile. He won four straight to start 2016 - the G3 Thunder Road Stakes at Santa Anita April 9, the G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile over Bal A Bali in March, the minor California Cup Turf Classic January 30 and an Allowance Optional Claiming December 26 of 2015. What a View was terrific last year and seems poised to start another streak after his win last time out. He shoots for his first graded stakes score in nearly 14 months with Tyler Baze guiding him from gate 2.

Bolo

Has 16 career starts with five wins, a second and four third place finishes for trainer Carla Gaines. He was last seen running third in the G3 Thunder Road Stakes here April 29 after a ninth in the G1 Maker's 46 Mile at Keeneland April 14, a third in the G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile on this track March 11 and a win in the G2 Arcadia Stakes here February 11 - his second straight win in that race. Before that was an ugly ninth in the G2 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar, a tenth in the G1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs last May 7, a respectable second behind What a View in the 2016 G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile and a win in the G2 Arcadia Stakes February 13 of 2016. Bolo has been inconsistent to say the least and lines up having placed in three of his last four starts overall. Corey Nakatani has been tabbed to ride from the outside post 7.

Farhaan

Phil D'Amato trainee won a couple of minor stakes races in 2013/2014 and has nine wins, three seconds and three third place finishes in 31 career starts. He has been good lately - a win last time out in the G3 Thunder Road Stakes on this track April 29 followed a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming here March 9. Before that was three straight disappointments - an eleventh in the G3 Bold Ruler Handicap in October at Belmont Park, a sixth in the G2 Commonwealth Turf Cup at Laurel Park September 24 and a fourth in the G2 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga September 5. Prior was a two-race win streak against lesser competition - a Waiver Claiming August 19 and a Claiming July 24. Farhaan has been trending upward ahead of this weekend, has four wins from six tries at one mile on turf and shoots for a second straight graded stakes score with Flavien Prat in the reins from gate 4.

Free Rose

Richard Baltas trained gelding has four wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 13 career starts. He made his stakes debut August 6 at Del Mar and provided a huge upset win in the Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap after consecutive thirds in Allowance races. He has continued to be competitive - a disappointing fifth last time out way back on December 3 followed a second in the G2 Twilight Derby at Santa Anita November 4 and a great win in the G2 Del Mar Derby here September 4. Free Rose has placed in six of his last seven races ahead of this weekend with three wins over that span but tries to bounce back off an uncharacteristic effort. Norberto Arroyo gets the call from post 5.

Gangster

lightly raced Doug O'Neill trainee has two wins and a second-place finish in 10 career starts. He made his stakes debut two starts back and finished eighth in the G1 Santa Anita Handicap March 11 and was seventh last time out in the G2 Charles Town Classic April 22. He had a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming February 4 and a fourth in a similar race January 2 - both at Santa Anita. Other results include an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Del Mar in November and off-the-board finishes in his three previous starts. Gangster has been decent against lesser company but hopes to finally shine against stakes foes Saturday. He hopes to make a major statement with Mario Gutierrez in the irons from gate 6.
