2016 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Race Preview

Bolo - has nine career starts with four wins and two third place finishes for trainer Carla Gaines and enters off a career best effort - a win in the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes ere February 13. Before that he was last of nine as favorite in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational way back on July 4. He won his stakes debut - the minor Eddie Logan Stakes by 4 1/2 lengths on turf December 27, 2014 and an Allowance race in gate-to-wire fashion here in May but also had a disappointing twelfth in the Kentucky Derby. Other good results include a third in the 2015 Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby April 4 and another third behind Dortmund and Prospect Park in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes - his graded stakes bow March 7, 2015. Bolo has won two of his last four starts overall but has a knack of throwing in a dud as well. He hopes to build on a terrific effort and to gain a little consistency on a track he's won all three career starts when he leaves from gate 4 with Mike Smith guiding him.

Bal a Bali - Brazilian Triple Crown winning Richard Mandella trainee has an impressive 13 wins, a second and two third place finishes in 18 career starts. He won his last eight races at home before debuting in North America with a nice win in the Grade 3 American Stakes at Santa Anita in May. He went on to a pair of disappointing fifth place finishes - the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita in June and the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile in August. He has been better in three starts since - an OK third in the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes last time out here January 2 followed a respectable second in the Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar November 27 and an Allowance Optional Claiming score on that same track October 30. Bal a Bali has been a tad difficult to figure out but when right in a worthy adversary. He chases his first graded stakes win since May at a distance he's won six of nine starts. Bal a Bali departs from post 3 with Flavien Prat in the irons.

Om - has 11 career starts for trainer Dan Hendricks with five wins, a second and three third place finishes. He has placed in eight straight races ahead of this weekend - a somewhat disappointing third last time out in the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes here February 13 followed a nice win in the Grade 2 Mathis Brothers Mile on this track December 26, another third as favorite in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar November 28 and two good wins - the Grade 2 Twilight Derby here October 24 and in gate-to-wire fashion in the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby September 6. Before that was a second as favorite in the Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap August 9, a third in his graded stakes debut - the Grade 3 Affirmed and a dominating 2 1/4 length Allowance Optional Claiming score at Santa Anita in May. Om is one of two horses to ever beat American Pharoah - by 7 1/4 lengths back in August and has been good in the lead-up to this race. He looks for his fourth win in five starts on Santa Anita turf in his second start against older entries as he leaves from the rail with Gary Stevens aboard./p>

Midnight Storm - won the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby in August, 2014 for trainer Phil D'Amato and had a second in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile in June but hasn't been the same since. Last time out was a terrific bounce back win however - in the Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar November 27 after a sixth in the Grade 3 Eddie D Stakes October 3, a tenth in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar in August and a fifth in the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes in July. Midnight Storm has five wins and three seconds in 13 career starts and looks to build on a nice effort last time out. Victor Espinoza gets the call from gate 6.

What a View - Kenneth Black trained gelding has four wins and two second place finishes in 10 career starts. He makes his graded stakes debut Saturday on the heels of two straight wins on this track - the minor California Cup Turf Classic last time out January 30 and an Allowance Optional Claiming December 26. Before that was a fifth, a second and a win respectively in Allowance races on California tracks. What a View steps into graded stakes company for the first time in good form - from gate 2 with Kent Desormeaux aboard.

De Treville - British bred John Shireffs trained colt makes his North American debut Saturday after eight starts in Europe produced two wins, four seconds and three third place finishes. Last time out was his only off-the-board finish - a seventh in August at Deauville after a second in a Group 3 race at Longchamp, a third in a Group 3 race at Chantilly in June and another second in a Group 3 race at Chantilly in May. He looked good at home before last time out and hopes to make a little noise Saturday from the outside post 7. Tyler Baze will be in the saddle.

Kenjisstorm - has three wins, two seconds and a third place finish in 16 career starts. He has placed in four of his last five starts ahead of this weekend - an Allowance Optional Claiming score last time out on this track February 6 followed a second in a similar race on this track January 18, an ugly ninth in the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes January 2 and a Starter Allowance score November 20.
