2016 Cotillion Stakes Race Preview at Parx Racing

Songbird 1-2 - Jerry Hollendorfer trained undefeated superstar filly and reigning Eclipse Award winner for two year old fillies won all four of her starts in 2015, the last three in Grade 1 events. Her debut was by 6 1/2 lengths in July which was followed by wins by an impressive 5 1/4 lengths in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante September 5, the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes by 4 1/2 lengths at Santa Anita September 26, and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies by an impressive 5 3/4 lengths. She has six starts in 2016 and six more impressive wins - in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes last time out at Saratoga August 20, by over five lengths in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks July 24, by 6 1/2 lengths in the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks June 18, by 3 1/4 lengths in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks April 9, the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes by 3 3/4 lengths March 5 and by 6 1/2 lengths in the Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes February 6. She hasn't been touched yet - six gate-to-wire wins in 10 starts - by a combined 50 lengths - as impressive as any horse in any division. She will look to keep the incredible roll going Saturday - from post with Mike Smith aboard the obvious favorite.

Cathryn Sophia 5-2 - John Servis trained filly has eight career starts with six dominating wins (the first four by a combined 41 1/2 lengths) and two third place finishes. Last time out was a win in the minor $150,000 Princess of Sylmar Stakes on this track September 3 after a third in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park June 11, a nice win in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks May 6 and a third in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland April 9. Before those results was a good seven length win in the Grade 2 Davona Dale Stakes at Gulfstream February 27, a win in her graded stakes debut - by an impressive 5 1/2 lengths in the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes January 30, a win in her stakes debut - by an incredible 16 1/2 lengths in the $100,000 minor Gin Talking Stakes at Laurel Park December 5 and a win by an astounding 12 3/4 lengths at first asking at Parx in October. She has been a factor in every race so far and should be so again Saturday. Javier Castellano gets the call on the morning line second choice from gate 2.

Carina Mia 5-1 - Bill Mott trained filly has four wins, two seconds and a third place finishes in eight career starts. She enters off a decent third in the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga August 27 which followed a second behind the terrific Songbird in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks July 24 and a two race win streak - the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park June 11 and by six lengths in the Grade 2 Eight Belles Stakes at Churchill Downs May 6. Before that was an uncharacteristic fourth in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland in April and another impressive two race win streak - by 4 1/2 lengths in the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes at Churchill Downs November 28 and a maiden score by 9 3/4 lengths in record time at Keeneland October 29. Carina Mia has been very good so far and is expected to be competitive again Saturday. Julien Leparoux has been tabbed to ride the morning line third choice from the rail.

Land Over Sea 10-1 - Doug O'Neill trained filly will hit the track for the twelfth time Saturday off an ugly twelfth in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational July 9 and a disappointing sixth in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico May 20. Before that was a good second in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks May 5, a career defining 4 1/2 length win in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks March 26 and consecutive runner-up finishes - behind Songbird in the Grade 2 Santa Ysabel Stakes at Santa Anita March 5 and behind Songbird in the Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes February 6. She's also posted a seventh behind Songbird in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile October 31, another respectable second behind Songbird in the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita September 26 and a third behind Songbird yet again in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante September 5. Land Over Sea was very good before her last two starts and will be out to avenge those performances. She departs from gate 4 with Mario Gutierrez aboard.

Disco Rose 20-1 - Robert Reid trained filly has just one win in 15 career starts to go along with four seconds and two third place finishes. She placed in just one of three graded stakes tries this past winter - a third in the Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes at Aqueduct in November and has been OK since. Last time out was a second behind Cathryn Sophia in the minor Princess of Sylmar Stakes here September 3 after she failed to place in her previous two starts. Disco Rose looks for her first win in a year and for her first ever stakes score from post 3 Saturday with Edwin Rivera aboard.

Queena Esther 30-1 - Juan Vazquez trained filly has placed in six of eight career starts - three wins, a second and two third place finishes - all on this track. She makes her graded stakes debut off a fourth in the minor Princess of Sylmar Stakes and two Allowance Optional Claiming scores - July 9 and May 23. Queen Esther has been decent against lesser competition and will be out for a breakthrough against top company - from the outside gate 6. Carol Cedeno gets the call.
