2016 British Columbia Derby Race Preview at Hastings Racecourse

Opportunistic 9-5 - has four wins in eight career starts for trainer Troy Taylor and enters on a nice three race win streak - all minor stakes races. Last time out was in the Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial Handicap on this track August 22 after the Emerald Downs Derby July 31 and the Chris Loseth Handicap here July 1. Opportunistic has been untouchable this summer and steps into graded stakes company for the first time Saturday. Jockey David Lopez will be in the saddle looking to continue an impressive streak on this morning line favorite - from gate 2.

Silvertown 3-1 - Dino Condilenios trained gelding has placed in 10 of 12 career starts but has just one win to go along with six seconds and three third place finishes. His win came in a Maiden Claiming April 22 and he has placed in four straight races since - all minor stakes. Last time out was a second in the Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial Handicap here August 22 after a pair of thirds - the minor Emerald Downs Derby July 31 and the minor Chris Loseth Handicap on this track July 1 and a second in the minor River Rock Casino Handicap in June. Silvertown has been knocking on the door and chases his first stakes score Saturday from gate 6. Rico Walcott has been tabbed to ride the second betting choice.

Stanz in Command 9-2 - Charlene Miller trained multiple stakes winner has four wins, a second and two third place finishes in nine career starts - all on this track. His wins came early in the summer - the minor Jim Coleman Province Stakes May 8 and the minor River Rock Casino Handicap June 5. He has been OK in three starts since - consecutive thirds ahead of this weekend - behind Opportunistic in the minor Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial Handicap August 22 and the minor British Columbia Cup Stellar's Jay Handicap followed a fourth behind Opportunistic in the minor Chris Loseth Handicap July 1. Stanz in Command has placed in four of his last five starts overall and steps into graded stakes company in decent form. Richard Harvey Hamel has the mount.

The Accuser 8-1 - Rob Chabot trained gelding has placed in five of nine career starts - one win, one second and three third place finishes - all at Northland Park. He stepped into graded stakes company for the first time last time out and finished an OK third in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby August 20 after a second in the minor Count Lathum Handicap July 16, a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming July 2 and a maiden score June 15. The Accuser has been OK the last four starts and could be in the mix Saturday. Damario Bynoe has been tabbed to ride from the outside post 9.

Sorryaboutnothing 8-1 - has just one win and one third place finish in 10 career starts for trainer Troy Taylor but has failed to place in seven of his last eight starts ahead of this weekend. He ended 2015 with a seventh in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity and started 2016 with an eighth in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes and an OK third in the minor Pasadena Stakes at Santa Anita in March. Last time out was a sixth in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park August 20 after a fifth in a Claiming race at Del Mar July 23 and consecutive sixths - both Allowance races earlier this year. Sorryaboutnothing hasn't looked good lately but is the most experienced entry in the field. He hopes to parlay that experience into a career defining win from the rail. Antonio Ambrosio Reyes rides.

Moon King 12-1 - Greg Tracy trained colt has just one win and a second place finish in seven career starts. He makes his graded stakes debut Saturday in a bit of a funk - a fifth last time out in an Allowance at Northlands Park August 20 followed a tenth in the minor LARC Sir Barton Stakes May 21 at Pimlico. Before that was a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Churchill Downs in May and a maiden score at Keeneland in April. Moon King hasn't been great but will be after a career-defining win from post 7 Saturday. Keishan Balgobin is scheduled to ride.

Mighty Mesa 15-1 - has just one win in nine career starts for trainer Nancy Betts with four seconds and a third place finish - all at Hastings. He makes his stakes debut Saturday on the heels of consecutive second place finishes - an Allowance Optional Claiming last time out August 14 and a Claiming August 5 and a maiden score July 16. Mighty Mesa takes a huge step up in competition in so-so form and will depart from gate 4 with Skyler White Shield guiding him.

Crazy Prophet 15-1 - John Snow trained gelding has three wins and a second place finishes in 10 career starts but hasn't looked great lately - failing to place in his last four starts. Last time out was a fourth in the minor Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial Stakes August 22 which followed a sixth in the British Columbia Cup Stellar's Jay Handicap August 1, a sixth in the minor Chris Loseth Handicap July 1 and a fourth in the minor River Rock Handicap June 5. Crazy Prophet looks for his first stakes score and his first win overall in 5 months - from post 5 with Denis Araujo in the irons.

Always Sunny 15-1 - lightly raced Barbara Heads trained gelding has a win in three career starts - that win coming in his debut. He has since posted consecutive fifth place finishes - the minor British Columbia Cup Stellar's Hay Handicap August 1 and an Allowance Optional Claiming July 10. Always Sunny hasn't been all that impressive so far but will try for a breakthrough win from gate 8 Saturday. Amadeo Perez gets the call.
