Marshua's River Stakes 2016 at Gulfstream Park

Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 3 Marshua's River Stakes will be contested this Saturday, January 9 from Gulfstream Parkin Hallandale Beach, Florida. Fillies and mares four years old and upward will be after the winner's share of the $150,000 purse when they saddle up and go 1 1/16 miles on Gulfstream's turf track.

A deep field of nine plus three Main Track Only Entries have been confirmed for the Marshua's River Stakes - race 4 on Gulfstream's busy Saturday schedule. Post time is 1:35 PM. Here is a look into the past performances of all 12 possible entries for this Grade 3 stakes.

2016 Marshua's River Stakes Race Favorites

Sandiva - Irish bred Group 3 winner in France - Todd Pletcher trained filly won the minor Tropical Park Oaks here at this distance to close out her 2014 campaign and won the Grade 3 Suwannee River Stakes at Gulfstream Park in February and has been OK since. Last time out was an OK third in the Grade 3 My Charmer Handicap at Gulfstream Park West November 21 which followed a disappointing fifth in the Grade 1 Just a Game Stakes at Belmont Park June 6, a third in the Grade 2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile in May and a second in the Grade 2 Honey Fox Stakes in March - the last two results coming behind eventual Breeders' Cup Mile winner Tepin. Sandiva has placed in five of her last six stars and will be out to snap a four race losing streak on a track she's posted two wins and a second in her last three starts. Javier Castellano has been tabbed with accomplishing that goal from the rail.

Hope Cross - Irish bred Chad Brown trained filly made her stakes debut November 21 and finished a good second just ahead of Sandiva in the Grade 3 My Charmer Handicap at Gulfstream Park West and followed that with another second - last time out in the minor South Beach Stakes here December 12. Before those results she won two of three races - an Allowance Optional Claiming at Belmont Park October 22 and an Allowance at Saratoga in August. She had a fourth in an Allowance Optional Claiming sandwiched in there. Hope Cross has three wins, six seconds and a third place finish in 12 career starts - competitive virtually every time out. Joe Bravo will be in the reins Saturday as Hope Cross chases her first graded stakes score from post 7.

Partisan Politics - posted a nice win in her second career start - the $100k PG Johnson Stakes at Saratoga August 27, 2014 but has been a tad up and down since - a fifth last time out in the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere Stakes at Churchill Downs November 14 followed a good win in the minor Pebbles Stakes at Belmont Park in October, a second in the minor Riskaverse Stakes at Saratoga in August and a fourth in the Grade 2 Lake George Stakes in July. She also had a decent second in the minor Wild Applause Stakes at Belmont Park June 14 and a sixth in the 2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Partisan Politics has been good at times in her career - not so good at others. Jockey Irad Ortiz will be in the saddle Saturday looking for Partisan Politics first graded stakes score in her Gulfstream debut from gate 2.

Quiet Kitten - Marcus Vitali trained filly makes her graded stakes debut Saturday having posted seven wins, a second and four third place finishes in 17 career starts. She looks ready for her step up in competition - a win last time out by two lengths in a Starter Stakes here December 5 followed a second in the minor Cellars Shiraz Stakes October 31 and two more wins - a Starter Optional Claiming here in September and an Allowance at Monmouth Park in August. Quiet Kitten has been very competitive the last five months and should be again Saturday. She departs from post 5 with Angel Cruz in the saddle.

Tuttipaesi - Irish bred Bill Mott trained mare won three of five starts at home before shipping. She debuted in North America in March, 2013 and finished third in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride Stakes and followed that with a second in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes a month later. She was off for 20 months before returning with a sixth in an Allowance in November, 2014. She enters on the heels of a two race win streak - the minor South Beach Stakes over Hope Cross here December 12 and the minor Suffolk Downs Distaff Turf in October. Those wins followed a disappointing ninth in the Grade 3 Noble Damsel Stakes at Belmont Park September 19 and an OK a second in the minor Fasig-Tipton De La Rose Stakes at Saratoga August 8. Tuttipaesi looks to make it three straight wins and for her first graded stakes score - from gate 8 with Christopher DeCarlo tabbed to ride.

Devine Aida - Christophe Clement trained filly posted four straight wins at this time last year - the Herecomesthebride Stakes by 6 3/4 lengths at Gulfstream February 28 and the minor Ginger Brew Stakes by 3 1/2 lengths on January 3 being the best results. She has been OK since - a third last time out in the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere Stakes November 14 at Churchill Downs followed a second behind Partisan Politics in the minor Pebbles Stakes at Belmont Park October 12, a disappointing ninth in the Grade 2 Black- Eyed Susan Stakes in May and a fourth in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks in March. She now has four wins, two seconds and a third place finish in nine career starts but looks to snap a four race losing streak Saturday. Luis Saez has the mount from gate 6.

Strike Charmer - Mark Hennig trained mare won the Grade 3 Cardinal Handicap in November, 2014 and went on to a fifth in last year's edition of this race. She has been OK since - an Allowance Optional Claiming score last time out at Aqueduct November 26 followed a third in the Grade 3 Old Forester Mint Julep Stakes at Churchill Downs in June, a sixth in the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile in May and a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming in March. Strike Charmer has four wins, three seconds and three third place finishes in 15 career starts and hopes for her first graded stakes score in 14 months. Julien Leparoux gets the call from gate 4.

A Little Bit Sassy - Michael Matz trained mare won the minor Edgewood Stakes in Mat, 2013 - her only stakes score thus far. She has been OK since. Last time out was a sixth in the Grade 3 Athenia Stakes at Belmont Park October 17 which followed a second in the minor Glen Hill Farm One Dreamer Stakes in September, a third in the minor Fasig-Tipton De La Rose Stakes in August and an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Penn National in July. A Little Bit Sassy has failed to hit the board in her last four graded stakes tries and hopes to change all that from the outside post 9 with Joel Rosario aboard.

Shannon Nicole - Ian Wilkes trained mare has four wins, four seconds and three third place finishes in 16 career starts. She won two minor stakes in the summer of 2014 - the Indiana Grand Stakes and Remington Park Oaks and followed that with consecutive thirds last winter - the Houston Ladies Classic in January and the Zia Park Oaks in December. She was forced to the sidelines for 10 months and returned November 27 with a disappointing sixth in the Dream Supreme Stakes at Churchill Downs. Shannon Niccole searches for her first ever graded stakes score and her first win overall in 16 months Saturday when she leaves from post 3 with Corey Lanerie guiding her.

Stiffed - Main Track Only entry won the minor Monmouth Beach Stakes in her second stakes start - back in May and followed that with a good second in the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher Stakes on that same track in July - her graded stakes debut. Stiffed has been up and down since - a third last time out in the Grade 3 Rampart Stakes here December 12 followed a sixth in the Grade 3 Turnback the Alarm Handicap at Belmont Park October 30, a good win in the minor Jersey Girl Handicap in September and a fourth in the minor Lady's Secret Stakes in August. Stiffed now has five wins, a second and three third place finishes in 15 career starts.

Can't Explain - Main Track Only Entry had two wins in seven starts last year - the minor Wasted Tears Stakes at Gulfstream Park September 5 and an Allowance Optional Claiming on that track in May. Last time out was a tenth in the Grade 3 My Charmer Handicap at Gulfstream Park West November 21 after a fifth in the minor Maryland Millions Ladies Stakes at Laurel Park October 17. She also had an ugly eighth in the minor Spook Express Stakes four starts back at Gulfstream Park.

Gambler's Rose - Main Track Only Entry has just two wins, six seconds and three third place finishes in 16 career starts. Last time out was an eighth in the Grade 2 Falls City Handicap at Churchill Downs November 26 after an Allowance score at Keeneland October 24, a third and a tenth respectively in a pair of Allowance races in the fall.
