2016 Carter Handicap Preview, Entries & Odds

2016 Carter Handicap Race Preview at Aqueduct
Salutos Amigos 2-1 - has won six of his last 12 starts (all stakes) for David Jacobson - the Mr. Prospector Stakes at Monmouth June 28, the 2015 Tom Fool Handicap two years in a row including last time out March 12, the Grade 3 Toboggan Stakes last February, the minor Gravesend Stakes in December, 2014 and the Grade 3 Fall Highweight Handicap November 27 of that year. Before his latest win Salutos Amigos had consecutive runner-up finishes - the Grade 2 Palos Verdes Stakes February 7 at Santa Anita and as favorite in the Grade 3 Midnight Lute Stakes January 2. He also raced to consecutive fifths to end his 2015 campaign - the Grade 3 Fall Highweight Stakes at Aqueduct in November and the Breeders' Cup Sprint in October and had a decent runner-up finish in the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes September 26. Salutos Amigos has been trending upward and off a win should be the one to catch Saturday. Cornelio Velasquez will be in the irons of the morning line favorite from post 5.

Majestic Affair 5-2 - Chad Brown trained gelding has 12 career starts with six wins and three runner-up finishes, He has been very good the last five months - an Allowance Optional Claiming score here December 16 was followed by a win in the minor Jazil Stakes on this track January 16 and a respectable second last time out in the Grade 3 General George Stakes at Laurel Park February 15. He has been trending upward ahead of this weekend and will be after his first graded stakes score from gate 2. Kendrick Carmouche has the mount.
Calculator 6-1 - Peter Miller trained colt has seven career starts with two seconds and two third place finishes. He enters off an OK third in the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita Match 12 and consecutive wins - an Allowance Optional Claiming February 13 and in terrific fashion in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes January 10, 13 months earlier. His seconds came in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes September 27, 2014 and in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity September 3 of that year - both coming behind Derby favorite American Pharoah. Calculator has been off the track more often than not the last couple of year but has shown serious form when he does indeed run. Junior Alvarado had been tabbed to guide Calculator for his first graded stakes score in 15 months - from post 7.
Anchor Down 6-1 - Todd Pletcher trained Ringling has 11 career starts with three wins, a second and two third place finishes. He posted an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Belmont Park in July but failed to place in his next five starts including a fifth in the Grade 3 Philip H. Iselin Stakes in August and a fourth after getting DQ'd from third last time out in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Handicap March 5. He posted an OK third in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Gulfstream Park January 27 but has been unflattering for the most part. Anchor Downs will be after his first stakes score Saturday and enters in less-than-spectacular form. John Velazquez will be in the saddle Saturday from gate 6.

- Open an OTB AccountDads Cap 8-1 - defending two time winner of this race in this race has just three starts since - an ugly ninth last time out in the Grade 3 Tom Fool Handicap on this track March 12 followed a seventh place finish in the Grade 3 Toboggan Stakes and a third place finish in the Grade 2 True North Stakes way back on June 5. He also had a pair of decent runner-up finishes to start his 2015 campaign - the Grade 3 Tom Fool Handicap and the Grade 3 Toboggan Stakes. Dads Cap has just two wins in the last 24 months and has failed to place in his last two overall. He will be out to avenge a couple of ugly efforts on a more favorable Aqueduct main track where he's won all three career starts when he leaves from post 3 with Irad Ortiz aboard.
Sassicaia 10-1 - Rudy Rodriguez trainee has four wins, five seconds and two third place finishes in 15 career starts and enters on a tidy two race win streak. Last time out was in his stakes debut - the Grade 3 Toboggan Stakes on this track January 30 and before that the win came in an Allowance Optional Claiming also here December 26. Sassicaia has placed in four of his last five starts overall and arrives in career-best form. John Bisono rides from the rail.
Green Gratto 12-1 - defending runner-up in this race has six wins in 39 career starts to go along with six seconds and seven third place finishes and enters this week off a fourth in the Grade 3 General George Stakes at Laurel Park February 15. Before that was a third in the Grade 3 Toboggan Stakes, a win in the minor Gravesend Stakes here December 26 and a nice win in the Grade 3 Fall Highweight Handicap also on this track November 26. Green Gratto has placed in four of his last five starts overall, has hit the board in his last five starts on this track and will be out to snap a two race losing streak on Saturday. Jose Ortiz has been tabbed to ride from gate 4.
Stallwalkin' Dude 15-1 - David Jacobson trained gelding has 14 wins, four seconds and six third place finishes in 39 career starts and enters in OK form. Last time out was an Allowance score at Parx March 21 which followed a third in the Grade 3 Tom Fool Handicap here March 12, a fifth in the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream Park December 19, a win in a Starter Stakes December 5, a fourth in the minor Frank J. De Francis Memorial Stakes at Laurel Park November 14 and an eighth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. He also had a third in the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park September 26, a win in the minor Tale of the Cat Stakes at Saratoga August 23, a second in the minor Teddy Drone Stakes August 2 and a third in the Grade 3 Belmont Sprint Championship in July. Stallwalkin Dude has placed in 13 of 16 starts ahead of this race and will be after his first ever graded stakes score from gate 8 Saturday. Manuel Franco will be in the reins.

Purse $400,000 A HANDICAP FOR FOUR YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD. By subscription of $400 each which should accompany the nominations; $2,000 to pass the entry box and an additional $2,000 to start. For horses not originally nominated, a supplemental nomination payment of $4,000 along with the entry and starting fees may be made at any time prior to the the publication of weights. The purse to be divided 60% to the winner, 20% to second, 10% to third, 5% to fourth, 3% to fifth and 2% divided equally among the remaining finishers.
