British Columbia Derby 2014 at Hastings Racecourse

Las Vegas, NV - Hastings Racecourse Racetrack in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada will be the scene of the Grade 3 British Columbia Derby this Sunday, September 14. A group of three year olds will chase this winner's share of the $150,000 purse for 1 1/8 miles around Hastings' dirt track.

The British Columbia Derby has attracted a field of 10 to go in race 9 on Hastings Sunday schedule. Post time is 5:13 PM. Here is a brief look into the credentials of all 10 entries for this Grade 3 stakes.

2014 British Columbia Derby Race Favorite Entries

Koffee Grinder - has seven career starts with four wins, a second and a third place finish - four wins and a second in five starts this year. Last time out was a second in the minor Richmond Derby Trial Handicap August 22 which followed a three race win streak including three minor stakes races on this track. Koffee Grinder has been sensational the last eight months and will look to avenge a second place finish last time out. Richard Hamel gets the call from the rail.

Mebossman - is coming off a win in the minor Emerald Downs Derby August 10 after an Allowance Optional Claiming score in July, a fourth in the minor Coca-Cola Handicap in June and a second in the minor Auburn Handicap in May. He has seven starts this year with three wins and a second and happens to be in the best form of his career. Mario Gutierrez has the mount from post 2.

Slice of Red - enters off a nice win on this track - over Koffee Grinder in the minor Richmond Derby Trial Handicap August 22 - at 29-1, after a disappointing sixth in the British Columbia Cup Stellar's Jay Handicap August 4, an Allowance score July 12 and a fifth in the minor Coca- Cola Handicap at Emerald Downs in June. Slice of Red has six career starts with three wins and a second place finish and has alternated wins and miserable performances - he could be due for a letdown this week. Keishan Balgobin has the mount from the outside post.

Distillery - has eight starts this year with two wins, a second and three third place finishes and has placed in his last three overall ahead of this weekend. Last time out was an OK third in the minor Richmond Derby Trial Handicap here August 22 after an Allowance score August 3 and another third in the minor Chris Loseth Handicap in July. Distillery looks for his first stakes win Sunday with Amedeo Perez in the reins from post 6.

Del Rio Harbor - ships in from Washington State having placed in all five starts this year - two wins, two seconds and a third place finish. He enters off consecutive seconds - behind Mebossman in the minor Emerald Downs Derby last time out and in the minor Seattle Slew Handicap in July. This after a nice win in the minor Coca-Cola Handicap, a third in the minor Auburn Handicap in May and a two race win streak. Del Rio Harbor has been worse than second just once in his last 10 starts - as competitive as they come. Gallyn Vick Mitchell rides from post 4.

Alert Bay - Anita Bolton trained gelding has nine career starts - three wins, four seconds and a third place finish and has three wins, a second and a third place finish in six starts this year. He enters off a career worst performance - a fifth in the minor Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar August 1 after a second in the minor Silky Sullivan Stakes in June, a third in the minor Snow Chief Stakes in April and a three race win streak - including the minor Echo Eddie Stakes at Santa Anita in April. He had looked sensational before hitting a bit of a wall in the spring and will look for a bounce back Sunday with Rico Walcott aboard from gate 5.

Remembertobreathe - has nine career starts with two wins, two seconds and a third place finish. He won two straight Allowance races in June and followed that with a fourth in the minor Chris Loseth Handicap July 1, a second in an Allowance August 3 and another good second last time out in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park August 16 - his graded stakes debut. Remembertobreathe will have Ryan Pacheco in the irons from gate 7.

Wonder World - is coming off a nice win in the minor CTHS Sales Stakes on this track September 1 which followed a third in an Allowance August 3 and a Maiden Claiming score here in July. Wonder World has five career starts with two wins and a third place finish and enters having won two of his last three starts on this track. Alex Bisono rides from post 3.

Off the Top - multiple stakes placed Robert Anderson trained gelding has 10 career starts with one win, three seconds and two third place finishes and enters off a disappointing tenth in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby August 16 after three consecutive runner-up finishes. They include the minor British Columbia Cup Stellar's Jay Handicap at Hastings August 4, the minor Chris Loseth Handicap in July and an Allowance in June. Off the Top looks for his first win in a year and leaves from gate 8 with Frank Perez Fuentes aboard.

Tapicero - enters this weekend having failed to place in his last three starts - a fifth last time out in the minor Richmond Derby Trial Stakes here August 22 followed a fourth in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Gulfstream in June and a fifth in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes in May. Before that was a two race win streak - an Optional Claiming April 18 and a MSW March 21 - both at Calder. He has those two wins, two seconds and a third place finish in nine career starts and enters in less than spectacular form. Scott Williams will be in the irons from post 9 Sunday.
