This race holds major implications for its entrants. It is a prep race for the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 12th and it is seen as a major stepping stone for horses and trainers hoping to make a splash at this year's Triple Crown. Bob Baffert sends three horses to the post in a field that includes such names as Liaison, Rousing Sermon and Sky Kingdom, all of which ran at the CashCall Futurity in December. The CashCall has produced some quality talent as of late - winners of that event have been victorious in all three of the Triple Crown stops in the last three years.
For those of you wanting a glimpse into some of the talent ahead of this year's Triple Crown, the Robert B. Lewis is not to be missed.
Here is a list of the entrants and the credentials that brought them to this important and prestigious early season race.
The Favorites:
Liaison - Liaison enters the Robert B. Lewis with high aspirations. An early favorite to contend for the Kentucky Derby crown, Liaison most recently won the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity for trainer Bob Baffert on December 17th and won the Real Quiet Stakes on November 12th - both races at Hollywood Park. In four career starts, Liaison has won three times and finished third once.
Rousing Sermon - Rousing Sermon finished second to Liaison at the CashCall in December in a race that he almost won and also second to Liaison in the Real Quiet Stakes. As a two-year-old, Rousing Sermon won twice, finished second twice and finished third twice in six starts. Rousing Sermon won the Bob Benoit California Cup Juvenile Stakes on October 29th at Santa Anita.
Sky Kingdom - Bob Baffert trained Sky Kingdom most recently won an Allowance race at Santa Anita and before that finished fourth in the CashCall. Sky Kingdom is yet another highly touted Bob Baffert trained entry for this event.
The Others:
Chips All In - will make his three-year-old debut on Saturday and is coming off a win at the Eddie Logan Stakes at Santa Anita on December 31st and a second place finish at the Golden Nugget Stakes at Golden Gate on November 12th. It will be Chips All In's second start on dirt after four quality starts on synthetic surfaces.
Isn't He Clever - most recently won the Riley Allison Futurity on December 30th at Sunland Park and finished second at the Clever Trevor Stakes at Remington Park on November 11th.
Empire Way - Has one win in three career starts. Most recently Empire Way finished fifth in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity and ran sixth in the Grade 3 Hollywood Prevue Stakes both at Hollywood Park.
I'll Have Another - finished second at the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar but followed that up with a disappointing sixth place finish at the Grade 1 Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga.
Groovin' Solo - most recently won a Maiden Special Weight race at Santa Anita on December 30th but finished at a distant 13th at Hollywood Park's CashCall Futurity in December.
The Robert B. Lewis Stakes is Race 6 on Santa Anita's Saturday card with a Post Time of 3:05 PM PST.
