Success in this race could lead to bigger and better things for the elders of the horse racing world. Participation in the $200,000 San Antonio Stakes over 1 1/8 miles on Feb. 5 or the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap over 1 1/4 miles on March 3 could become a reality with a good result on Saturday.

With the field of 8 going all out to secure a start in some bigger races later in the year, and only three previous graded stakes winners in the field, the 2012 San Pasqual Stakes could be wide open.

The Contenders:

Tres Borrachos - This 7-year-old gelding has had issues on the main track at Santa Anita - just one show in seven starts. But Tres Borrachos will likely be the favorite on Saturday. Trainer Marty Jones has turned Tres Borrachos around since taking over for George Hicker and Button Stable with a win at the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar, a show at the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs and a place the next day at the Native Diver handicap.

Tweebster - didn't win last year but placed 3 times and added a show in just five starts.

Skipshot - one of only three graded stakes winners in the field on Saturday was held winless in five starts last year. Skipshot's last win came at Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park in July of 2010.

Uh Oh Bango - another one of the three previous graded stakes winners. Starting from Post 8, Uh Oh Bango could be dangerous. Holds a victory as recently as last May at the Berkeley Stakes.

The Others:
Thirtyfirststreet, Utopian, Java Man and Massone round out the field in Saturday's race.
