Carpe Diem Wins Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs
Las Vegas, NV - The $350,000 Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby was contested at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday, March 7 - a Road to the Kentucky Derby points race for three year old hopefuls. Even-money favorite Carpe Diem claimed victory and the 50 qualifying points toward the Run for the Roses in relatively easy fashion in the 1 1/16 mile test- by five lengths for his third win in four starts. 13-1 shot Ami's Flatter finished second with Divining Rod getting in for third. Danzig Moon, Great Stuff, and Moonlight Bandit came next, followed by previously undefeated, 17-10 second choice Sam F. Davis winner Ocean Knight. My Johnny Be Good brought up the rear in the group of eight while Souper Colossal scratched.
