Gormley Wins Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park

The $100,000 G3 Sham Stakes was contested Saturday, January 7 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Horses three years old were featured as they took to Santa Anita's sloppy dirt track and raced one mile. It was 8-5 second choice Gormley that proved best on the day in the field of seven, outdueling second place finisher and even money favorite American Anthem by a head in the stretch. With the win, Gormley earned 10 qualifying points to the Kentucky Derby - American Anthem earned four. 11-1 shot Big Hit came in third, 13 lengths back, followed by Bird Is the Word, Term of Art, and Colonel Samsen, to complete the order of finish. Blabimir was eased in the stretch and did not finish.
