Second Summer Wins Californian Stakes at Santa Anita Park
Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California played host to the $200,000 Grade 2 Californian Stakes on Sunday, May 22 - a 1 1/8 mile dirt test for horses three years old and upward. It was 9-1 long shot Second Summer with Mario Gutierrez in the saddle that prevailed for his first ever stakes score in the field of just six - Gutierrez avenged a rather disappointing result aboard Nyquist in Saturday's Preakness Stakes. Hard Aces came on late to finish second at 5-1 odds while 4-5 favorite Lieutenant Colonel tired to finish another 2 1/2 lengths back in third. Point Piper was fourth followed by 9-2 second choice Follow Me Crev and El Huerfano to complete the order of finish. Crittenden scratched.
