John’s Call Quotes

Shug McGaughey, winning trainer of Tricky Hat (No. 1): "I thought he won initially, but I didn't know watching the replay. I thought Rosie [Napravnik] gave him a great ride. When he came around the turn she just said, 'The heck with it, we gotta go.' I'm pleased. He had two good races at Keeneland earlier in the spring, then he had a clunker at Monmouth. He trained great and ran great today, so we're happy."

Rosie Napravnik, winning jockey aboard Tricky Hat (No. 1): "I was planning my move on the backside and I looked back and I could see that Edgar [Prado, aboard Holiday Star] had me blocked pretty good. There's no getting out on Edgar, so I said 'I'm just going to have to sit here and wait and hope something opens up.' The horse is small, so luckily, we got through. I wasn't really sure whether or not we won the photo, but he's a really talented horse. Sometimes you've just got to trick him into winning. He's a little bit difficult. It's definitely a mind game with him a little bit. I sit on him with a ton of confidence, but the last part of the finish you have to really make sure you get him on the right timing. I don't think we could have gotten the timing any closer today."
