Wildcat Red Set for Return in Saturday’s $75,000 Quality Road Stakes Rainbow 6 Solved for $40,000 Payoff

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Wildcat Red is set to make his first start since running in the Kentucky Derby in Saturday’s $75,000 Quality Road Stakes at Gulfstream Park, where the Florida-bred colt had distinguished himself in his seven previous starts.

“He’s a Floridian,” trainer Jose Garoffalo said Friday. “He loves the heat; he loves the sun; he loves Gulfstream Park.”

Wildcat Red, the 3-5 morning-line favorite in a field of seven in the 1 1/16-mile stakes for 3-year-olds, has never been worse than second at Gulfstream since making a winning debut on Sept. 14. The son of D’wildcat finished first five times, including victories in the Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth (G2) and the Hutcheson Stakes (G3). His two second-place finishes came in the Gulfstream Derby, a head behind General a Rod, and the Besilu Stables Florida Derby (G1), a neck behind Constitution.

“He galloped strong this morning,” said Garoffalo, whose trainee suffered a brutal trip at Churchill Downs on May 3 while finishing 18th. “He’s ready.”

East Hall, rated second at 4-1 in the morning line, is coming off a second-place finish in the Sir Bear Stakes on May 3. The Bill Kaplan-trained gelding has finished behind Wildcat Red in three stakes meetings. Notyouraveragejoe, rated third at 5-1, is set to make his 2014 debut after winning the Juvenile Turf Stakes and finishing second in the Pulpit Stakes last fall. Best Plan Yet, 8-1 in the line, is a multiple-stakes winner looking for his first win of the year.

Luis Saez, who rode Wildcat Red to victory in the Fountain of Youth, is scheduled to venture from New York to ride the Honors Stable Corp’s colt in the Quality Road, the ninth race on the 10-race card.

Saez also has the mount aboard Hey Leroy in the 4-year-old's return to the Gulfstream turf course over which he had three victories during the Champions Meet, including a triumph in the Appleton (G3). The Manny Azpurua-trained gelding, who finished second in the Dixie (G2) at Pimlico on Preakness Day and off-the-board in the Manhattan (G1) on Belmont Stakes Day, is rated as the 7-5 morning-line favorite in the seventh race, a 1 1/16-mile starter allowance on turf. The 20-cent Rainbow 6 was solved for the second straight racing program at Gulfstream on Friday, providing one lucky bettor with a $40,000 jackpot.

The six-race sequence featured five straight double-digit winners before a 3-2 favorite clinched the jackpot payoff for the only bettor holding a ticket with the winners of all six races. The 1-5-4-3-5-12 winning combination included Dioncecht ($11.40) in the third, Starship Shawty ($16.20) in the fourth, Ziete Machos ($16.80) in the fifth, Achiever's Legacy ($26.40) in the sixth, Carni ($17.80) in the seventh and Bachata Dancer ($5) in the eighth.

A Lewiston, Maine player solved the Rainbow 6 on Sunday, cashing for a $219,761.86. The Rainbow 6 will offer a $50,000 carryover jackpot guarantee for Saturday. A mandatory payout is scheduled for Sunday, when the whole pool will be disbursed to either the holder of a unique ticket or bettors holding tickets with the most winners in the six-race sequence.

The 50-cent Pick 5 provided a nice payoff of $13,673.60 for a ticket with the winners of the last five races on the card.

Who's Hot: Trainer Joe Catanese III’s string of hard luck was snapped in yesterday’s sixth race, when debut winner Achiever’s Legacy put him in the winner’s circle. The 2-year-old daughter of City Zip, who got a ground-saving trip under Antioco Murgia, provided her trainer with his first win of the year.

“I thought she’d run good. She’d been training really well,” said Catanese, whose filly returned $26.40 for her 1 ¾-length victory in the five-furlong turf race for 2-year-old maidens.

Achiever’s Legacy was one of only two fillies in the field of nine juveniles.

Jockey Juan Leyva rode a pair of winners: Dioncecht ($11.40) in the third and Bachata Dancer ($5) in the eighth.
