Debutante Stakes at Del Mar
Las Vegas, NV -- A field of 10 is entered for Saturday's $250,000 Del Mar Debutante Stakes. Two of the top horses in the field are Killer Graces and Woebegon, but both were beaten as favorites in their last starts. The winner on Saturday could be headed for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs in November, so this is a huge race for these 2-year olds.
Killer Graces will probably be the top horse betting choice on Saturday. The horse is the only one in the field who has previously won a stakes race. Killer Graces won the Cinderella and the Landaluce Stakes earlier this year but last time out finished seventh in the Sorrento Stakes. That result could be thrown out though because she stumbled out of the gate. "If she runs back to the races at Hollywood and closes and gallops out like she did, I'd have to say we're really live in there," said trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Killer Graces has won two of her four lifetime starts and will be ridden by Joe Talamo, who is battling Joel Rosario for the riding title at Del Mar.
If Killer Graces doesn't go off as the betting favorite then it will probably be Dreamcaster. The horse was extremely impressive winning her debut last month at Del Mar. She is trained by Bob Baffert, who is looking for his seventh win in the Del Mar Debutante. She will be ridden by Martin Garcia.

Another threat on Saturday could be Woebegon. The horse is coming off a loss in the Landaluce Stakes to Killer Graces but her trainer, Peter Miller, is taking the blame for that loss as he ran her back really quickly after her first win. "You're only as good as your last race," Miller said. "I blame myself for the second race, the loss. I should not have run her back in three weeks."
Also in the field on Saturday are Weemissfrankie, Self Preservation, Evelyn's Dancer, Coup de Coeur, Silent Saga, Wild Truffles and Emerald Gold. Self Preservation is making her North American debut after winning one of two races in Ireland. She could be an interesting longshot with Pat Valenzuela in the irons.
Also worth a look could be Weemissfrankie who won her maiden debut and Coup de Coeur who has Rosario in the irons.
The Del Mar Debutante is race #8 at Del Mar on Saturday and has a post time of 5:30 pm Pacific Time. If you have an account with Offtrackbetting.com you can watch the race live. You will also receive the best rebates on the web.
