144th Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park

Dave Bond, OTB Writer

Las Vegas, NV - The 144th running of the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes comes our way from Belmont Park this Saturday. It has become the race that nobody wants to miss. Three year olds will go 1 ½ miles on Belmont's main dirt track in search of their share of the $1 million purse.

History could be made in the 11th race on Belmont's packed Saturday card. For those of you who have been living under a rock - welcome back and keep your eye on a little colt named I'll Have Another. He will attempt to become only the 12th horse in history - the first one since 1978 to win the Triple Crown and he will be up against 11 entries that would love nothing more than to spoil the party. Post time is 6:40 PM. Here is a look at Ill Have Another's recent results and the credentials of the others looking to knock him off.

2012 Belmont Stakes Race Favorites

I'll Have Another - I'll Have Another's bid for a Triple Crown ended Friday morning with the shocking news that the horse was out of the Belmont Stakes because of a swollen left front tendon. Trainer Doug O'Neill made the announcement on Dan Patrick's radio show this morning that I'll Have Another will be scratched from the 2012 Belmont Stakes.

Dullahan - finished third in the Kentucky Derby and could be a threat to I'll Have Another. He won the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 14th and before that finished second to Howe Great in the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes after finishing fourth at the Grade 1 Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs in November. He also has a win at the Grade 1 Dixiana Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland in October. Dullahan is a force but is he good enough?

Union Rags - Union Rags had won four of six career starts before a terrible start resulted in a disappointing seventh in the Kentucky Derby - a second in the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile by a nose to Eclipse Award winner Hansen and a third in the Grade 3 Florida Derby being his only blemishes. Among the wins is the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes on February 26th at Gulfstream, the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont in October and the Grade 2 Three Chimneys Stakes at Saratoga in August.

Belmont Stakes 2012 | Remaining Field Entries

Paynter - is Bob Baffert trained - you have to bet that Baffert would like a little revenge for his star Bodemeister who has decided to skip the Belmont. Paynter debuted with an impressive 4 ½ length win in a 4 ½ furlong Maiden Special Weight race on February 18th at Santa Anita, finished fourth in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby and bounced back with a second at the Grade 3 Derby Trial Stakes at Churchill Downs and a win in an Allowance last time out at Pimlico.

Street Life - finished a decent third most recently in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes on this track after a disappointing sixth in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial Stakes on April 17th. He did have two straight wins before that - a Maiden Special Weight score and at the Broad Brush Stakes at Aqueduct on March 17th

Optimizer - most recently finishes sixth in the Preakness to follow up an 11th in the Derby. He had a second and two ninth place finishes in his last three starts prior to that and is little threat in the Belmont.

Atigun - has won a couple of Allowance Optional Claiming races in 2012 but also has an 11th in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes and a fifth in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby. Atigun doesn't figure to be in the mix Saturday.

Unstoppable U - will make only his third career start after a couple of wins including an Allowance Optional Claiming race on this track on April 27th.

Ravelo's Boy - has three starts in 2012 - a fifth in the Gulfstream Park Derby, a fourth in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes and a fifth last time out in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby. Ravelo's Boy has been OK and more of the same should be expected.

Guyana Star Dweej - will make his stakes debut after a win and four second place finishes in his last five starts.

Five Sixteen - will also make his stakes debut after a fourth last time out in an Allowance at Aqueduct followed a win in a Maiden Special Weight race on March 14th.

My Adonis - started 2012 decently - a third at the Grade 3 Holy Bull followed by a second at the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes. Since then My Adonis has a seventh in the New York City Wood Memorial and a third last time out in the Cannonero II Stakes on May 5th.
